Fewer sets of awards will be awarded in the weightlifting competitions at Paris 2024
The Executive Committee of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) has approved the weight categories in which athletes will compete at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
In the competitions among men, medals will be awarded in five weight categories: up to 61 kg, up to 73 kg, up to 89 kg, up to 102 kg and over 102 kg.
Women will also perform in five categories: up to 49 kg, up to 59 kg, up to 71 kg, up to 81 kg, over 81 kg.
In this regard, we contacted the First Deputy Chairman of the Weightlifting Federation of Uzbekistan, Vice-President of the Asian Weightlifting Federation, member of the IWF Executive Committee Shakhrillo Makhmudov and asked about his opinion on this situation.
"Indeed, the Olympic weight categories have changed. Athletes are not tied to one weight, but change categories. It may be a challenge for us to adjust, but overall, it's not a tragedy. I believe that we will get a license for all allocated quotas, based on the capabilities of our athletes. Therefore, we will focus our attention on winning medals in the new Olympic categories”" Sh.Makhmudov.
Recall that at the Tokyo Olympics, weightlifters played 14 sets of awards — 7 each for men and women. It is also worth noting that in this sport at the Rio 2016 Olympics, the domestic athlete Ruslan Nurudinov won a gold medal in the weight category up to 105 kg, and at the main starts of the Tokyo 2020 quadrennial, another Uzbek athlete Akbar Juraev, performing up to 109 kg, rose to the highest step of the podium. Now there will be no such weight categories at the Paris-2024 competitions.
